Welcome to the ‘Babies Behind Bars’ website!
The organization dates back to 2008 though the idea was born many years ago when Romy Titus ended up behind bars, not due to any criminal act but reported on a story for prime time news on children in prison.

See OUR STORY for more information.

Today ‘Babies Behind Bars’ is a Public Benefit Organization (PBO) with its main aim to look after children who live with their mothers behind bars. The sad reality remains that it’s not a place for children and if you’ve ever seen a prison cell on TV or seen it with your own eyes you’ll realise that the cold concrete floors and walls, the little windows and the double barrelled cast iron doors is not an environment to raise tomorrow’s leaders or condusive to raising healthy little people, but at times the mothers have no other option.

Some babies are born in prison as their mothers were sentenced at the height of their pregnancy, others could not bear the thought of being separated from their offspring whilst other mums just had no one they could leave their bundles of joy with and know that they’re safe and taken care of. There are many sad stories. These, are just some of how these kiddies ended up living like they did crime.

And that’s where we come in!
Generous hearts who have heard about ‘Babies Behind Bars’ have played an important role participating our monthly drives to help us achieve our goals of taking care of the children’s basic needs. Food, formula, clothing, shoes, toys, toiletries and nappies have come pouring in and that is how we’ve been managing to put smiles on little faces in jail.

For now we’re operating in 4 prisons  but have a dream that through these good Samaritans who have donated goods and who continue to support the organization we’re able to put smiles on a lot more children’s faces across prisons in South Africa.
